CE4 and CE5 Cartomizers

Why do I get a burnt taste from the CE4 or CE5 Cartomizer?

Some people describe a burnt taste from these cartomizers after only a few days of use. This is caused by a wick that is getting burned. The wick passes through a coil in the center of the cartomizer. When the battery is activated, this coil heats up and vaporizes the liquid in the wick. Overheating the coil will cause it to burn the wicking fibers. When that happens, it produces a very unpleasant taste/feeling and it can become harder to draw on the e-cig.

This problem frequently occurs when you use a variable voltage battery that is set too high. However, it can also happen with a standard battery, particularly one that has just been fully charged. Here's what happens: When the tank runs out of liquid you don't always notice it until you start to get the burned taste. If you catch it quick enough and refill the cartomizer, the harsh/burnt taste goes away within two to three drags. Otherwise, you have to replace the cartomizer. This can also occur when you take long drags on the e-cig and hold the button down until the end of the drag. Since the coil is still hot and no longer has air passing by it, the liquid gets completely vaporized leaving a dry wick which then gets burned. Once the wicking fibers have become burned, the only way to get rid of the taste is to replace it. By switching to the CE5 (rebuildable CE4) cartomizer, you only have to replace the atomizer head ($2.25) when this happens instead of the whole cartomizer ($3.50). A third way that the wick can burn is if you carry your e-cigarette in your pocket, a purse, or a backpack and you don't deactivate the button (see button lock feature). When the button is un-locked and accidentally gets pressed, the coil heats up. Without air passing past the coil, it gets overheated and burns the wick.

To avoid this burnt taste, you should do the following:

  • If you use a variable voltage battery, make sure you don't have the voltage set too high. This is especially true if you use a low resistance head on the CE5 cartomizer. The lower the resistance, the hotter the atomizer coil will get and the greater potential for burning the wick.
  • Always lock the button in the off position when carrying your e-cigarette in you pocket, purse, or backpack.
  • When you take a drag on your e-cigarette, press the button as you start the drag and hold it down for about 1 second, then let up and press it again for about 1 second. Make sure you release the button before you finish drawing air through the e-cig so the coil gets cooled down before you finish.
